I was sitting down to read email one morning as I always do. Before the school day begins. I had an email from a friend at Classical Conversations. For those who may not know what that is(classicalconversations.com) She was asking me if I had thought or would think about begin a Director/Tutor for the coming school year in Challenge B. Which is like middle school. Every Tuesday from 8:30 to 3 I get to share and learn and grow with a group of middle school students in 6 subjects. My first thought was really, did she send the email to the wrong address? Then I told her I would begin to pray about it and have family and friends pray with me as well. About two weeks into praying and searching and really getting hold on how I felt. I woke up at 3am and went to the computer and wrote a response to her. Yes I would truly be honored to become the Challenge B director/tutor for next year. Well saying yes, which I thought was the hard part, was the easy part. I have since that day been through a training class, a couple of meetings, view of mock trial, gathering books for subjects, and reading, reading did I say reading. Lets see, I went through school and college, and learned different subjects, but this is a whole new way to learn, but more than new it is the right way we should all have been taught. To learn through the integration of subjects. To recover the lost tools of learning. It has been a challenge for me to try to empty my mind and what I learned and start over. I remember a lot of the things I learnt, but do not remember always how I learned them. This changes all of that. To have students who come out of school and can hold a discussion with knowledge, and understanding. To be able to stand in any conversation and know what is being said and what to say about it. To be able to be argumentative in a good way. To have a paper written in grammar that is understood. To making writing and grammar, and rhetoric, and logic important again and where they should be what all of our education is about. So I am truly looking forward to the coming school year. But even more I am excited to see Arianna, Hunter and one day Wynleah go through the same steps from grammar stage and come out of Challenge in highschool and be self taught, To be able to go into the world and know how to learn anything new because they where taught how to learn, not just a bunch of stuff in subjects.
Now what I have to do is organize my house better, and get the school schedule worked out to where I will also have work to do each week. I have a whole summer of reading and learning to do. Feel smarter every time I read.
Now just a quick view of what I have to learn :. Latin?? !! Logic, History of Science Or gins, Mock Trial, Current Events, Literature short stories, writing and grammar. and more!!
I am looking forward to the students who will be a part of CC next year. If you would like more info for any child at any age you can come to an info meeting on May 20th. email me for me details and info!! tranquilitypro @yahoo.com
